May 16, 2013 - COCHRANE'S BRANDON THOMAS REMEMBERED WITH A MEMORIAL CHECKSTOP

Cochrane's Brandon Thomas was just 17 when his car was struck head-on by a pick-up truck headed in the wrong direction last December, killing him instantly.

The driver of the pickup, Ryan Jordan Gibson, 22, from Calgary, was arrested by RCMP at the scene and was charged with six offences which included impaired driving causing death.

Thomas was a friend to many students of Cochrane's three high schools and on May 15, they pooled their resources with Cochrane RCMP for an hour-long afternoon checkstop in Brandon's memory.

Ahead of the long weekend, it was the students' way of driving home the message that some are still not getting: If you're drinking alcohol; don't get behind the wheel.

Thomas' sister, Kayla, was invited by students to attend the checkstop and said each day has been a struggle since her brother's death.

Kayla was impressed by the initiative taken on by the students and thanked them for asking her to be part of it.

She couldn't stress enough the importance of drinking responsibly.
