Apr 28, 2010 - TEEN DIES IN THREE-CAR COLLISION [Jeremie LeBlanc case]

Jeremie LeBlanc, a 16-year-old Sherwood Park youth, was killed in Mill Woods last Friday night after his vehicle collided with two others.

LeBlanc was a student at Sherwood Park's Salisbury Composite high school.

Following an off day on Monday, students were greeted with the news Tuesday morning. Councillors were also at the school to help any grieving students cope with the news.

"Any loss of a young life is certainly tragic and Elk Island Public Schools extends our condolences to his family at this time," said Andrea Phare, spokesperson for EIPS.

Salisbury Composite principal Todd Filipek was unavailable for comment.

LeBlanc's family has asked the media to respect their request for privacy.

According to Edmonton Police Service, LeBlanc, was driving an Oldsmobile Alero around 11:30 p.m. on Friday, April 23 when it was hit by a Mercedes Benz and a Lexus IS250.

LeBlanc was taken to a nearby hospital where he died from injuries sustained in the collision early the following morning.

According to EPS, LeBlanc was turning left from 66 Street onto 31 Avenue in Edmonton when his Oldsmobile was hit by the Mercedes and Lexus.

"The driver of the Lexus attempted to swerve away from the Oldsmobile, but was not able to avoid a collision. Moments later, the Mercedes Benz also collided with the Oldsmobile," states an EPS press release.

After the collision, the driver and passenger of the Lexus fled the scene.

The driver of the Mercedes, an unidentified 31-year-old remained at the scene with minor injuries, but was charged for refusing to supply a breath sample.

As of Wednesday, EPS was still looking for the driver of the Lexus. Although the police service knows what company the vehicle belongs to, it is unclear who may have been driving it that night, according to a department spokesperson.

He said the investigation into the collision is ongoing and that excessive speed is one of the elements being examined by the investigators.
