Jan 26, 2015 - 3-YEAR SENTENCE HANDED DOWN IN METIS TRAIL FATAL CRASH [Francis Pesa]

A three-year sentence for the man who admitted to causing a deadly crash on New Year’s Day 2014.

Kulwinder Singh Chohan was handed the sentence, which was a joint submission by the Crown and defense, this morning.

20-year-old Francis Pesa was killed when the car he was in was hit by a truck on Metis Trail.

His mother Grace spoke to reporters about the judge’s address, which was directed at her family. She admits she was surprised, adding it “shows there is heart and an acknowledgement of the suffering that we are all going through.”

During sentencing arguments earlier this month, Pesa told the court she was handed a life sentence when her son died.
Pesa has also joined the movement towards mandatory minimum sentences for impaired driving-related charges.

Sheri Arsenault has led that charge, and says she’s glad to see that the sentence went from two to three years, but doesn’t agree with the judge’s thoughts that three years is enough in the public’s eyes.
