Jan 02, 2014 - IMPAIRED DRIVING CHARGES LAID IN METIS TRAIL CRASH [Francis Pesa]

Police have laid impaired driving charges against a man involved in a major crash on Metis Trail that left one person fighting for his life.

It happened just after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, between 80th Avenue and Country Hills Boulevard, and involved four vehicles.

Police say a southbound Dodge Ram lost control, crossing the centre line and swiping an oncoming Mazda before colliding head-on with a BMW sedan. The Dodge Ram was then hit by a northbound Buick Enclave.

The 20-year-old driver of the BMW was taken to hospital in critical life-threatening condition; an 18-year-old woman in the vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Two of the four passengers in the Buick, including a 24-year-old woman who is eight months pregnant, were taken to hospital as a precaution, but didn’t receive any injuries.

The driver of the Dodge Ram, a 36-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.

“There were a large number of witnesses that remained on scene and were able to tell us the person driving the [Dodge Ram] was not doing a very good job at all, and we suspect that’s because of the alcohol,” says Sgt. Joerg Gottschling.

Police have charged Kulwinder Singh Chohan with impaired driving, impaired driving over 0.08 and impaired driving causing injury.
